Epoxy use

Post by aie2 »

Hello,
sorry for a bit of a ridiculous question, as I might be overthinking the building process of the performance spectroscope quite a bit. However, I wanted to ask about gluing the grating to the 3D printed part... If I don't have access to 120um fishing wire, is it fine to just eyeball the amount? Is it possible to use something else other than fishing wire to estimate the thickness of epoxy against the grating?
Also, is it absolutely necessary to use 2216 epoxy, or is there a cheaper alternative?

Thanks

Also, what about degassing the resin? Do you let it sit out separately, and then mix the two parts? Or do you mix it immediately, let it sit for a few minutes and then apply?

The fishing wire + 2216 is just the state of the art; you can change gluing method if you can't access the one prescribed.

For the epoxy glue, just mix thoroughly the two components and apply a few dots only on the surface. When you place the grating, gently press it with a shearing movement to even out the epoxy. Then let cure as prescribed by the glue manufacturer. For 2216 I use 12h at 40°C :)

I ended up using 130um mono, and JBweld epoxy. Seemed to work fine.
