Adding confocal feature to Raman

Post by BowenZheng »

Hi there,

I'm planning on adding a confocal feature to the Raman, so I was wondering if I can make these changes to the current Raman design:

1. Could I move the components (left of the red dashed line) to the left? I'm unsure if the distances matter in this case.

2. Do you know what beam splitter I can use to split the beam that comes out of the beam splitter after it goes through the sample but before it goes through the optical components? I'm unsure whether splitting up the beam would weaken the signal since I want part of it for the confocal part.

For reference, this is the design I'm hoping to incorporate into the current Raman design:

You can move those elements without any issue :)

About the beamsplitter, I would rather use a beam sampler. The difference being mainly in the transmission/reflection ratio. If you use a 50:50 beamsplitter, you will loose half of the laser in the forward direction and half of the Raman scattering in the backward direction; so a total of 75% losses! With a beam sampler, such as a 90:10, you will loose only 10% per passes (20% losses in total).

Also, rather than moving the elements, why not just put everything in front of the spectrometer ? I don't see any reason it wouldn't work :)

Hi Luc,

Thank you for the valuable feedback! Could you send me the Solidworks part file of the base plate for the performance edition so I have access to the sketch history and I'll be able to edit it from there?

Best,
Bowen
