Re: Cheapest possible "toy" spectrometer? $323

You can definitely add up spectra to decrease the noise. The collection time does increase the SNR up until the saturation point of the sensor or you can average several readings together. In Luc's software, he also adds up pixel columns whereas in in CCD spectrometers they use a lens to push the ph...

Re: Interesting other forum threads on low-cost raman

Yes it is the same ( link for anyone interested ). Science Surplus has ran out though but they are still floating around ebay. That's interesting point regarding the slit. Is a collimation lens needed after the fiber then or would the achromat doublet just focus the light straight from the fiber? So...

Interesting other forum threads on low-cost raman

I received my R spectrometer from Thunder Optics, and when I opened it up I found a nice B&W tek BTC-110S** . This led me to some google searches where I found an old post from Luc on another forum: Open-source Raman spectrometer looking for academic partners The same forum has some other good t...

Re: invalid node error during connect to camera in Spectrum Analyser

I don't know why it would happen with a fresh build but I do know you have to install an old version of the api (Spinnaker SDK 2.0.0.147) to connect with the provided build.

Review of cheap $35 532nm Laser

Wanted to offer this review of a cheap laser. I got it off Amazon, however I found similar units on Alibaba Express (probably where the Amazon sellers get them). To Luc's comment about scalability of using this, I see Alibaba suppliers claiming 1million+ units per month production ability. That said...

Re: Cheapest possible "toy" spectrometer? $323

Something I've been wondering about: How much can software help with a noisy sensor? Could we run thousands of readings through an denoising algorithm and get a stable result? I don't think so. This would work if the noise was predicable (think headphones that hear fan noise which has a specific pa...

Re: Cheapest possible "toy" spectrometer? $323

Yeah with this design/concept the idea would be for the tradeoffs to always be in favor of cost and see how cheap you could go and still see something. Currently on the market there is not a sub-$1000 raman system. The 90 degree would produce rays in all directions, so is it because you would have t...

Cheapest possible "toy" spectrometer? $323

I came up with this design for what I imagine would be the cheapest possible raman design that I can think of. These were my ideas: Use a 90 degree scattering to avoid dichroic lens 1" lens to get as much light as possible [potentially even a larger cuvette path length]? Use plano lens to focus...

Wavelengths other then 532nm?

Hi All, The question of wavelength adjustment for fluorescence is a recurrent one and one day I'll have to make something because it's a real issue people are facing. To comment on what has been said, yes indeed larger excitation wavelengths will shift the signal in the NIR part of the spectra wher...

Re: Photos of your build

Photo attached I used this 532nm fiber laser from civil laser which was only $1280 when I bought it (and when this is posted). I think it worked pretty well! I measured to .9% Isopropyl but stopped there. I did have to make several changes: I flagged these parts as needed to be changed with new prod...
