Luc

did you ever get a chance to work on this part of the software?

Re: Signal to noise calculation

That is very interesting, thanks for clarifying that. The book mentions that, and I didn't quite understand what it was saying until you broke it down, saying: Unfortunately, the SNR is often calculated in the literaure as bar S/sigma b, which is a fundamentally different quantity from the SNR defin...

Re: Raman Probe design WIP

My biggest struggle continues to be with the getting light collimated out of the fiber, and coupling back in (basically the only fundamental differences between my design and OpenRaman...). Today I used the thorlabs multimode collimator for the input laser (I discovered that it screws on to the 1/2&...

Re: Raman Probe design WIP

Thanks for the note! That is funny the story about your boss using the wrong fiber. I wonder if other systems re-focus the light or something? I went ahead and bought that fiber you linked and I'll try it. My spectrometer has a 50um slit so it will keep only 25% but then with 7 cores instead of 1 ma...

Signal to noise calculation

To my knowledge ignoring attributes like size, cost, flexibility, excitation wavelength, accessories, vendor support, and so on there are three scientific qualities of a raman system: Signal:Noise Ratio (SNR), Wavelength Range, and Resolution. According the chemical analysis book I cited elsewhere, ...

Re: Raman Probe design WIP

I ran into some issues: First, I tried to use a bandpass and not a longpass filter at the output side at first, which produced garbage in the output. Fixed that but unfortunately the lens I got back was too thin for the holder, so for now I put it in the output lens tube, which means most of the sig...

Re: Modifications required for faster Inline detection

Luc can give a much more informed opinion but, The issue with high powered lasers is you are pumping a lot of light energy into a tiny focused dot so you end up instantly evaporating your sample or destroying it. There is actually a list of things you can change though: From this book: McCreery R. L...

Re: Robustness of OpenRAMAN to transport

Yep, no problem.

If they were driving around with the system in the back of a truck, it should work assuming everything was screwed tight. They would just want to check alignment at each stop but that takes no more then a minute if you are quick.

Thanks for the question!

Re: Robustness of OpenRAMAN to transport

I want to emphasize one thing... the screws MUST be tight. If they are lose things will move even by a firm touch while using the system. It would be worth someone figuring out a good torque wrench value. If you use the vinyl 3d printing you can strip the screws, so there's a range of things being v...

Re: Robustness of OpenRAMAN to transport

I can speak to this as I've shipped some builds There's a few issues: The camera is held on by a single bracket so it "floats". It stays in place but I think it might slightly slide if the travel was rough The kinematic alignment tools stay in position pretty well and are stiff, but they d...
